Headaches are probably one of the most commonly occurring health problems that most individuals face at some time in their lives. Often, patients can get rid of them fast with available over-the-counter medications; however, today, they have resorted to more natural approaches to dealing with headache disorders.
But do these remedies heal the diseases at the root levels, or are they superficially relieving the illness? Because of the rising popularity of these alternative treatments, it is important to understand their effectiveness and drawbacks to make sensible decisions towards our health.
To know more, we spoke with Mukul Shah, CEO and Co-founder of Lifechart, who shared his expert insights on managing headaches and other related health issues through natural remedies. Here are his responses to some key questions:
What are some of the most effective natural remedies for managing common headaches, and are there any safety precautions to keep in mind?
Simple natural remedies can be highly useful for easing common headaches. However, the first step a person should take is to keep themselves properly hydrated, as dehydration is a common trigger. Warm herbal teas, such as ginger or tulsi, can help with hydration while also offering a soothing effect. Another possible cause of headaches is poor digestion; incorporating Triphala or fennel water into your routine can support gut health and ease symptoms. Aromatherapy is another helpful approach—applying eucalyptus or peppermint oil to the temples often provides quick relief. For stress-related headaches, Ayurvedic herbs like Brahmi and Ashwagandha are highly beneficial. However, it is important to use these remedies in moderation and consult a professional if the headaches become frequent or severe.
Can you suggest herbal or dietary solutions for improving digestion and addressing issues like bloating or indigestion?
Improving digestion and managing issues like bloating or indigestion can be achieved by incorporating Ayurvedic spices and natural foods into the diet. Spices such as Jira, Dhaniyaka, Shunti, and Madhirika (saunf) are particularly effective in aiding digestion and easing gas. These can be added to dishes or enjoyed as herbal teas. Fermented foods like buttermilk or fresh curd mixed with rock salt are excellent choices for promoting gut health and balance. Another helpful remedy is Triphala, an Ayurvedic combination of three fruits (Haritaki, Bibhitaki, and Amla), known for supporting digestion and ensuring regular bowel movements. Equally important is sticking to a regular meal schedule and avoiding overeating, especially at night.
How can individuals identify whether a natural remedy is suitable for their specific health condition or if they should seek professional advice first?
To choose the right remedy, one has to understand the cause of the problem. For instance, there are home testing kits that help and assist in the identification of certain conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or fatty liver. According to Ayurveda, the remedies should be selected in a way that they are suitable for the person’s constitution. It is important to note that even something as simple as ginger, which might help many with bloat, may not be suitable for a person with Pitta Prakriti constitution imbalance. Always, it is better to consult a professional, and this is because you will be sure of the correct diagnosis. This is because a diagnosis provides insight into the problem so that the remedies used are those that will address the issue rather than just hiding it.
Are there any particular foods, herbs, or practices that can help boost immunity and prevent recurring minor ailments like colds or fatigue?
Natural ways of enhancing the body’s immunity are easy to incorporate into your daily routine. Using vegetables such as leafy greens and spices like pepper and turmeric during meals is very helpful. Drinking tea with tulsi leaves or turmeric milk reduces stress and supports immunity. Probiotic foods like curd and fermented items soothe digestion, and following a diet with whole grains and plant-based foods keeps the body strong. Additionally, exercises like yoga and meditation are essential in maintaining balance. However, always be careful when adding herbal remedies alongside conventional medicine.
What are your thoughts on combining natural remedies with conventional medicine? Are there any interactions people should be aware of?
Fruits, spices like Haridra (turmeric), and herbs like Tulsi are good options for boosting immunity. However, it is crucial to inform your doctor about any herbal supplements being used to avoid adverse effects, especially when taking medications like blood thinners. Combining natural remedies and conventional medicine must be done thoughtfully to ensure the best outcomes. Always seek advice to avoid harm and maximise the benefits.
