Midnight munching is never considered as a healthy habit. But we still cannot get rid of it, at least completely. If you are someone who struggles with midnight munching, health advisor Toby King has a couple of advices for you. He has highlighted some food items that could disrupt your sleep patterns and should not be consumed before bed.
According to a report by The Express, Toby said, "We've all heard the old tale that certain foods can cause nightmares, but what you eat before bed can impact much more than your dreams, it can affect your entire sleep quality." Here are a few food items that should be avoided before bed.

Onions

Onions can easily cause a disrupted snooze. This is because it can cause both acid reflux when lying down soon after consumption and uncomfortable bloating due to fermentable fibres.

Protein Shakes

The expert says that protein shakes before bed are never a good option. Indulging in protein shakes before bed might aid muscle restoration while you snooze, but be wary as it can ramp up metabolic activity during rest time.

Aged Cheese

Toby says, "Aged cheeses such as Parmesan, Brie or Gouda are rich in an amino acid called Tyramine, which can stimulate the release of norepinephrine." It can hamper with body's relaxation efforts.

Fermented Vegetables

Fermented vegetables such as kimchi or sauerkraut, are known for bolstering gut health. However, Toby advises steering clear at night. "You should save your fermented veggies for earlier in the day as at night they can cause bloating and digestive issues due to their high probiotic and acidity levels," Toby says.

Dark chocolate

Certain ingredients in dark chocolate can help you sleep such as magnesium, tryptophan and cocoa flavanols. However, it also contains stimulants and should be avoided before bedtime.
