In what comes as a groundbreaking development, the NHS in England is launching the trial of world's first artificial intelligence tool that can identify patients who are at the risk of type 2 diabetes, reports The Guardian.
The report reveals that doctors and scientists have developed a transformative AI tool - which can predict those at risk of the condition - as much as 13 years before it begins to develop. The technology analyses electrocardiogram (ECG) readings during routine heart scans. With this, it can detect subtle changes which are usually too small to be noticed by the human eye.
According to The Guardian, the NHS will begin the tool trial in 2025 at Imperial College healthcare NHS trust and Chelsea and Westminster hospital NHS foundation trust. It will be the first healthcare system in the world to do so.
Dr Libor Pastika, a clinical research training fellow at Imperial, while speaking to The Guardian said, "AI holds enormous potential to transform care that could lead to substantial improvements in health. By using AI to unlock insights hidden within ECG data, Aire-DM could be revolutionary in identifying future risk of type 2 diabetes early on." Further adding on that this will be a cheap, accessible, non-invasive way to predict type 2 diabetes risk early.
Additionally, the tool can also identify longer electrical activation times and even the differences in the manner the heart’s electrical signals reset. While these changes seem to be minor, they are very important in detecting the effects of diabetes on the heart’s structure and function.
