While working for long hours can be physically exhausting, it also has a negative impact on your mental health
Deepika Padukone has expressed shock over statements made by the chairman of Larsen and Toubro suggesting that employees should work long hours and even on Sundays. SN Subrahmanyan made the comments during an employee interaction when he was asked why the multi-billion dollar conglomerate was still making its employees work on Saturdays.
The actor, a big mental health advocate, took to her Instagram to condemn his comment. “Shocking to see people in such senior positions make such statements. #MentalHealthMatters," she wrote.
Subrahmanyan said that employees must work 90 hours a week, adding he regrets not being able to make his employees work on Sunday too. "I regret I am not able to make you work on Sundays. If I can make you work on Sundays, I will be happier, because I work on Sundays," Subrahmanyan was heard saying in an undated video.
The video has ignited debates online about work-life balance, workplace culture, and the expectations placed on employees in large corporations.
How does working longer hours affect your mental health?
While working for long hours can be physically exhausting, it also has a negative impact on your mental health. According to studies, there is a link between long working hours, stress, anxiety, and depression.
Experts say employees who work overtime usually rest and relax less, which results in poor sleep quality and fatigue. Lack of sleep can lead to exhaustion, which influences their productivity and the quality of work they deliver.
While working overtime regularly slowly decreases the quality of life, it also creates major mental health challenges, as you may not be able to spend much time with your friends and family members, leading to personal conflicts. This demotivates a lot of people and increases the chance of depression. A few other flipsides include:
Risk of burnout
According to mental health experts, consistently working long hours is a major factor in developing burnout, a state of emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced effectiveness at work.
Lowered productivity
While many people believe that working overtime can make you complete more tasks, experts say it is not true. While the employee has more time to do things, it does not necessarily mean that more things get finished, as it can lead to stress, exhaustion, and fatigue, which negatively affect productivity.
Less job satisfaction
Working longer hours causes more stress, leading to decreased job satisfaction. The money cannot make up for all the missed weekends or rest the person might get.
Effect on social life
Those with extra hours of work often complain of not having a social life. Experts say it happens because their loved ones often feel neglected, which creates conflicts in a relationship.
