Natural remedies for kidney health is a topic which has often been debated. While some say there are certain herbs and foods that can improve kidney function, prevent kidney stones, and support overall renal health, others claim that these claims hold no scientific merit and lack evidence, and some may even be risky.
Times Now Digital spoke to Dr Uday Dipakrao Gajare, Consultant Nephrologist, Asian institute of Nephrology and Urology Vizag about the impact of natural remedies on kidney diseases.
Hydration: Fact
Drinking enough water is one of the best ways to maintain kidney health. Proper hydration helps kidneys flush toxins, regulate blood pressure, and prevent kidney stones. Studies consistently show that water intake reduces the risk of kidney stones and improves urinary health, especially in people prone to stones.Cranberry Juice: Mixed Evidence
Cranberry juice is widely recommended for urinary tract health, particularly in preventing urinary tract infections (UTIs). Some studies support cranberry juice's role in preventing bacterial infections in the urinary tract, which could reduce the burden on the kidneys. However, it may not directly improve kidney health or function, and high sugar content in commercial cranberry juices can be a concern.Herbal Supplements: Fact and Myth
Herbs like nettle leaf, dandelion root, green tea and ginger are thought to support kidney health. While these herbs may act as mild diuretics, promoting urine production and reducing fluid buildup, there’s limited research on their long-term benefits. More concerning is that certain herbs, such as starfruit and aristolochic acid-containing herbs, are toxic to kidneys. Various organic acids and alkaloids, use of heavy metals (contamination during production) in traditional herbal medications have been implicated in kidney injuries Thus, it’s essential to consult a healthcare provider before taking any herbal supplement for kidney health.
Probiotics: Fact
Recent studies suggest that gut health affects kidney function. Probiotics, which support healthy gut bacteria, may indirectly support kidney health by reducing the production of uremic toxins that kidneys must filter out.
Many natural remedies for kidney health have some scientific basis, while others are more myth than fact. Staying hydrated, consuming a balanced diet, and consulting with a healthcare provider before trying supplements are effective, safe ways to support kidney health. Avoid self-prescribing herbs or extreme detoxes, as these can sometimes do more harm than good.
