In recent years, wellness trends like saunas and hot baths have gained popularity for their relaxation and therapeutic benefits. However, concerns have emerged about their impact on male fertility. Scientific studies suggest that prolonged or frequent exposure to high temperatures from these activities can adversely affect sperm quality and reproductive health.
Male fertility primarily depends on the production and quality of sperm, which is sensitive to temperature. High temperatures from saunas, hot tubs, or baths can disrupt this balance, potentially impairing sperm count, motility, and overall quality.
Research shows that frequent use of saunas or hot tubs can increase scrotal temperatures, temporarily lowering sperm production and motility. While occasional exposure may not lead to lasting fertility issues, men actively planning for conception are advised to limit such activities.
Dr Rajeev Agarwal, Fertility Specialist, and co-founder of Dame Health explains that heat exposure, particularly in hot tubs, saunas, or prolonged hot baths, can negatively affect sperm production. Scrotal overheating can:
- Disrupt the function of testes,
- Temporarily lower sperm count and motility.
Effect Of Saunas And Hot Baths/Tubs On Male Fertility
Dr Agarwal explains that saunas exposing the body to high temperatures in a dry, enclosed environment can effectively elevate the body's core temperature. Regular use of saunas may lead to a significant rise in the scrotal temperature, impairing sperm production. Studies have also found that men who frequently used saunas had a higher risk of having lower sperm concentration and motility compared to those who avoided heat exposure.
Similarly, hot baths/tubs can also increase the body to elevated temperatures. “Though one-time exposure to hot baths/tubs will not cause lasting fertility issues, frequent or prolonged exposure can be more significantly impactful. If a man is planning to conceive opt for lukewarm water instead, as it helps minimize the risk of scrotal overheating,” Dr Agarwal said.
Expert Recommendations For Men Concerned About Fertility
For those who are actively trying to conceive, it is advisable to opt for alternative options. Dr Agarwal shares a few suggestions:
1. Limit Sauna And Hot Bath/Tub Use: Limiting the use of saunas and hot baths/tubs is crucial; this helps maintain optimal scrotal temperature.
2. Take Breaks: If frequently exposed to heat therapy for relaxation or muscle recovery, take frequent breaks and allow the body to cool down. Take breaks from or avoid using laptops on the laps as they are also known to significantly raise scrotal temperatures.
3. Maintain A Healthy Lifestyle: Have a balanced diet, exercise regularly, regulate the sleep-wake cycle, drink enough water, and avoid smoking or excessive alcohol consumption, as these can support overall reproductive health.
4. Supplements: Taking supplements for fertility has become a trend, but choosing the right one is what matters. Supplements like Opti Men by Dame Health can help boost fertility by regulating testosterone levels, reducing DNA damage, and improving sperm quality.
