Kimchi, a staple in Korean cuisine, is garnering global attention as a powerful health food. A recent study led by Sung Wook Hong from the World Institute of Kimchi reveals that this fermented food can significantly aid in weight management, combat obesity, and promote gut health. With 16 per cent of the world’s population affected by obesity, incorporating kimchi into daily diets could be a game-changer.
Study Highlights the Benefits of Kimchi
The research involved 55 overweight male and female adults with Body Mass Index (BMI) values ranging from 23 to 30 kg/m. Participants were divided into groups, with one group consuming three kimchi capsules at every meal, equivalent to 60 grams of kimchi daily, for three months.
The study revealed promising results:
- Participants experienced an average reduction in body fat mass by 2.6 per cent.
- Body fat levels decreased by 31.8 per cent in obese people.
The study also examined the impact of kimchi on gut microbiome health. Researchers observed how the trillions of microbes in the gut responded to daily kimchi consumption, highlighting its role in improving gut health and reducing body fat.
Dr Hae-Choon Chang, director of the World Institute of Kimchi, emphasized the significance of these findings in a media release. "The results of this clinical trial systematically verify the anti-obesity effects of kimchi and provide scientific evidence to promote it as a globally recognized health food," he said.
Kimchi and Gut Health:
The study noted significant improvements in gut health among participants who consumed kimchi daily. Researchers found higher levels of Akkermansia muciniphila, a beneficial gut bacterium known to reduce inflammation, improve metabolic syndrome, and aid in obesity management.
At the same time, levels of Proteobacteria, a bacterial species commonly associated with obesity, decreased significantly. These findings suggest that kimchi not only supports weight management but also enhances gut microbiome composition, reducing harmful bacteria and promoting beneficial ones.
