Winter is a season of celebration, and we all love enjoying parties with friends and family. However, for those prone to gas or bloating, it is important to be mindful of what you eat to ensure a comfortable, bloat-free experience.
We tap experts, who share tips to help you enjoy your festivities without any digestive discomfort.
Indulge in foods with yoghurt or probiotics the night before
First, Dr. Ipshita Chakraborty, Dietician at CMRI Kolkata, says, pay attention to your diet the day before the party or event. “It is essential to stay hydrated and maintain regular bowel movements to prevent gas buildup. Drinking plenty of water and consuming foods made with yoghurt or probiotics the night before can aid digestion and ensure your stomach is clear on the day of the party, reducing the chances of bloating,” she says.
Choose your beverages carefully
At the party, be mindful of your drink choices. Many alcoholic beverages, especially those high in carbonation or sugar, Dr. Chakraborty says, can cause gas and bloating. “Drinks made from fermentable carbohydrates like barley, wheat, maize, and rice—such as beer—can contribute to bloating, particularly for those who are gluten intolerant. If you have sensitivities, choose your beverages carefully and avoid gluten-heavy options,” she advises.
Lighter options for the win
When it comes to food, it is best to steer clear of heavy, creamy, or overly fatty dishes as they can be hard to digest. “Go for lighter options like grilled kebabs, baked items, or non-greasy dishes that are easier on the stomach. If you are hosting a party, consider including healthier options that are delicious yet gentle on digestion, such as light dips, fresh salads, and lean proteins,” Dr. Chakraborty says.
Do not skip meals
Make sure to eat on time and avoid skipping meals, such as lunch, in anticipation of a big festive dinner. “Skipping meals increases the chances of dyspepsia (indigestion) or gas-related issues, which can put a damper on your celebrations. If you plan to consume alcohol socially, eat something beforehand, as drinking on an empty stomach can lead to gastric discomfort,” Dr. Shaswata Chatterjee, Consultant, Department of Gastroenterology, CMRI Hospital, Kolkata, says.
Eating before drinking can significantly reduce the risk of such issues and help you enjoy your holiday without interruptions.
Mind your portions
When it comes to festive meals, it is important to practice portion control. “Avoid overeating by eating slightly less than would make you feel full, as this can help prevent bloating and keep you comfortable throughout the celebrations. If you are feeling unwell, such as having a fever or cold, it is best to stay indoors and rest rather than pushing yourself to attend events,” she says.
Additionally, if you are prone to bloating or gas, particularly after drinking, consider taking a gas-relief medication beforehand. “However, consult your doctor before doing so, especially if you are already on other medications, to ensure it is safe,” Dr. Chatterjee advises.
