Diwali, the festival of lights, is a time of joy, family gatherings, and colourful celebrations. 1. Create a Calm, Quiet Space at Home
A peaceful, soundproofed room can provide relief from the sounds of fireworks. Set up a comfortable area with things that make you feel relaxed, such as soft pillows, blankets, or your favourite books. Try using noise-cancelling headphones or earplugs to create a buffer from the outside sounds. Techniques such as slow, deep breathing through the nose and exhaling slowly can reduce anxiety almost immediately. Inhale for a count of four, hold for four and exhale for four. Mindfulness meditation, where you focus on your breath and observe the present moment without judgment, can also help you stay calm. Apps like Headspace and Calm offer guided meditations that can be helpful for beginners. Practising these techniques daily leading up to Diwali can help you become more resilient to stress triggers.
3. Use Aromatherapy for Instant Calm
Certain scents can have a powerful calming effect on the mind. Lavender, chamomile, and sandalwood essential oils are known for their soothing properties. You can use a diffuser to spread these scents throughout your space, apply diluted essential oils to your temples, or keep a scented candle nearby. Aromatherapy helps to ease anxiety and provides a sensory distraction from external stressors like loud firecracker noises. If you’re outdoors, try carrying a small roller bottle of your preferred essential oil blend to use whenever you feel stressed.

Diwali’s noise levels tend to peak in the evening hours, so plan accordingly. Try to stay indoors during these peak times to minimize exposure. Avoid venturing into crowded areas where firecrackers are being set off, and if possible, schedule any errands or social visits earlier in the day when the environment is quieter.
If you have pets or young children, staying indoors during peak firecracker hours can help protect them from stress as well. You can further reduce exposure by keeping windows and doors closed, drawing curtains, and adding rugs or curtains that absorb sound. If you must go outside, earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones can be extremely helpful.
