Foods To Avoid If You Have Liver Cirrhosis

Liver cirrhosis is a chronic liver disease in which healthy liver tissue is replaced by scar tissue which impacts liver function. Cirrhosis is usually caused by long-term alcohol abuse, viral hepatitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease or autoimmune liver disease. Mayo Clinic says that each time the liver gets injured, whether by excessive alcohol consumption or another cause, such as infection, it tries to repair itself. In the process, scar tissue forms. As cirrhosis gets worse, more and more scar tissue forms, making it difficult for the liver to do its job.
When cirrhosis reaches advanced stages, it can be life-threatening. The damage caused by cirrhosis can’t be undone. However, if the condition is diagnosed early and the underlying cause is treated, further damage can be reduced. According to Mayo Clinic, “In rare cases, it may be reversed.”
If an individual is diagnosed with liver cirrhosis, there are certain foods that they should avoid. This helps to prevent the condition from progressing further.

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol completely as it damages liver cells and exacerbates cirrhosis, thereby, affecting the liver’s ability to regenerate and perform vital functions.

High-Sodium Foods

Processed foods like canned soups, chips and fast foods have excessive salt which tends to worsen fluid retention and swelling (ascites) linked to cirrhosis. Choose low-sodium alternatives.

Fried and Fatty Foods

Foods rich in saturated fats such as fried snacks, full-fat dairy and fatty cuts of meat, can add pressure on the liver, thereby, increasing inflammation and fat accumulation.

Raw or Undercooked Shellfish

Shellfish like oysters and clams can carry bacteria that are harmful to people with cirrhosis. This can lead to severe infections like Vibrio vulnificus.

Red and Processed Meats

These are high in saturated fat and difficult for a compromised liver to process. Stick to lean protein sources like poultry or plant-based proteins.

Sugary Foods and Drinks

Excessive sugar intake from sodas, candies and desserts can lead to fat buildup in the liver, also known as hepatic steatosis. This can worsen liver function.

Refined Carbohydrates

White bread, pasta and pastries cause blood sugar spikes, thereby, burdening the liver. Opt for whole grains like brown rice or quinoa.

High Vitamin A Foods/ Supplements

Overconsumption of liver, fish oil or supplements with retinol can lead to toxicity, thereby, stressing the liver further.

Excess Iron

Avoid iron-rich foods such as red meat and spinach in large amounts if your doctor says that you have an iron overload as it can exacerbate liver damage.

Herbal Supplements

Some herbs like kava, comfrey and green tea extract can be toxic to the liver. Always consult your doctor before taking supplements.

Carbonated Beverages

They can cause bloating and discomfort, thereby, worsening symptoms of cirrhosis-related fluid buildup.

Spicy Foods

Though not harmful directly to the liver, they may irritate the digestive system, thus, causing discomfort in people with cirrhosis.
